10/27/2014: Hike Nelson Lakes National Park

What a difference a day makes!  From turquoise waters to almost alpine conditions.

We spent the night in Nelson Lakes National Park on the banks of Lake Rotoiti.  Finding Kaka’s in the trees near the campground was one of the highlights of the trip.  Having the lense to actually get a good photograph was another.

Before we got on the road, we decided to hike along the Lakehead Track.  Silver Beech, fuchsias, ferns, mosses and lichens with a constant drizzle made for a different kind of experience for us.  Everything was so green and lush.  It was a fun walk although too short.  The mountains were calling and we would have liked to have gone much farther.

  1. The Tui’s call kept us laughing it had so much character. I felt like our campsite was intruding on his space but he tolerated us and kept singing
